Well water, how to tell if mine is good.

Hey guys just moved from the city to the sticks in NY around Buffalo. Now I’m on well water. How do I tell if the water is ok to use on my plants? It has a ppm of around 450. Also It is bad to use water from my softener right? Just looking for some info so I don’t hurt my little plant buddies.

Grow on guys, Thank you

Nick

Hey!! So I go to my big box orange hardware store and they have water kits that are mail in and free. The results weren’t anything to worry about. But I didn’t want to risk it so I grabbed a small ro filter, a plastic tote and float valve. The way I looked at it is, I’d rather spend the 2-300 bucks than have issues.
I believe Dude has ran water with softener in it. Check the search bar and see if anyone else has done it.
    Happy growing!!!

I’d say the right RO system would be your best bet. Water softeners are made to take care of your plumbing more than drinking quality. Your hard water can damage plumbing and fixures over time, due the amount calcium, magnesium, and iron. All hard minerals. There’s a good chance a lot of that 450 ppm is sodium from the softener removing those minerals. A good RO system is capable of removing up to 98% of that sodium. Also using your softened water through an RO system will help it last longer. Calcium and magnesium are some of the hardest minerals for a RO system to filter out.
